Onwer-Managed Business Report 2009Unprecedented activity on the global markets has caused chaos and uncertainty for many businesses. However, this year’s report suggests the downturn has also created opportunities that companies can capitalise on to expand their operations.

This report analyses the results and considers the courses of action companies can take to both survive and thrive in these challenging times.

The survey covered all industry sectors throughout the UK, finding the short-term prospects for the economy mixed. Growth has been stifled, with sales down and profits waning, forcing half of respondents to consider redundancies. However, the slow-down has also given businesses an excuse to analyse their processes, systems and operations, and implement moves to improve efficiency. There is also a renewed optimism for mergers and acquisitions, and firms have identified growth potential through absorbing new business from defunct competitors.

So, while the threats posed by the recession are real and present, there are also opportunities to create stronger companies that will be better placed to take advantage of the recovery.

Key areas of focus

The road ahead - predictions for growth
Only a minority of businesses expect sales and profits to grow over the next year, and many expect to shed jobs. But the gloom is not all-pervading and there is significant variation between regions and sectors.

Take your chances
Although respondents widely expected a slow down in sales, they also identified ways to expand operations.

The human factor
The downturn has inevitably resulted in job losses, but businesses still view people as their greatest asset and some are even planning to increase the size of their workforce

Security alert
Of the numerous challenges facing UK businesses in the current climate, four key threats to future growth and stability trouble owner-managers the most.

Going concerns
Successfully exiting your business is all down to the preparation and so the sooner you start making plans for your departure, the better.
