Developments since Pre-Budget Report

Given the sometimes dire prognostications for the motor industry this time last year, 2009 represented something of a great escape for the retail motor sector but it was still a very tough year

If the motor sector can be said to have escaped relatively unscathed that is only by comparison with the difficult trading conditions for high street retailers and most dealers have seen an increase in profits, albeit from extremely low levels.

The government’s scrappage scheme boosted footfall in dealerships and applied to over 250,000 registrations but the scheme, introduced in September 2009, is now coming to an end and will not be extended further.
